WINTER IN STORENG
Winter activities Aurora BorealisUsually the winter here in the cold North starts at the end of October, but it also happens that there is almost no snow before Christmas. The heaviest snowfall is during the months January, February and March. Then the snow lies at the fields like a white carpet until the beginning of May. The landscape varies between mountains, plateaus, woods and coast. And the weather will never become boring with it's ever changing moods; sun, snow, wind, icy coldness and storm. These elements of nature bear a lot of possibilities for various activities of different lengths here in our surrounding.
Until Christmas it's getting darker and darker every day and you can spend the night inside in front of the open fireplace with a nice cup of warm chocolade with the snowstorm raging around the house. But why not experience a snowstorm which changes the world outside into a white wonderland? Many think that the sky is deep black during the period of darkness, but this is absolutely untrue.Around noon we have a few hours daylight by clear weather. An alternative to sitting at the open fireplace can be to go out on a snowscooter-tour or with a dog sleigh through the night and watch the stars and maybe even witness the Northern Lights. It’s a phantastic experience!! When we were kids our parents told us that we mustn’t wave with a white tissue to the light, because then it would come down and take us. But nevertheless there are people who like to walk on the shore on stormy autumndays and watch the restless waves and see the trees swaying in the wind.
After a break of two months the sun comes back in January and lifts up the spririt. Everyone is eager to go on tour in the mountains or over the fields. Already in mid-February we have as much daylight as in Germany. After that the amount of light increases fast and already at the last days of April we have 24 hours light.
We have many occasions for tours. Some prefare to go fora long walk on ski. Others maybe like to make a less demanding and more exciting trip on a snowscooter or with a dog sleigh. Another will just leave his car and walk a bit, just enjoying himself and nature. It’s a usual habbit to take oranges and hot chocolade on such events. Some people like to built a fireplace , grill sausages and prepare coffee. Another good idea is to bring along skis and a spade and build a hill for a ski-jump-competition. Or you can just sledge down the hills. Those who doesn't feel like going so far can just built a snow-man or snow-house right in front of the door or wherever he likes. Maybe you even want to spend the night in your handmade house. Besides these activities you can also try a fishing trip at the fjord. Here lives an own sort cod in the fjord the whole year and in March/April the cod returns from sea so it’s always possible to catch fish (besides cod also wolffish and other sorts). Nothing tastes as good as selfcaught fish for dinner.
But all these are just some ideas of what you can do and experience up here. Sure your phantasy is unlimited. If you adjust yourself to the weather and like to play with the power of nature, you’ll experience unforgettable adventures.
So why not spend a winter at Storeng? You’re always welcome.
