WINTER At 70oN winter weather conditions and temperatures can change quickly, and light conditions are extremely different from the polar nights to the light nights of the spring-winter, as the period between winter and summer is called at these latitudes. For two months in the middle of winter the sun takes a break and stays below the horizon giving us polar nights, but this does not mean complete darkness. In the middle of the day at the end of December there are a couple of hours of daylight, and during the dark hours the snow on the ground and light from the northern lights, moon and stars give an amazing blue-grey lighting effect. In January the days grow noticeably lighter, and the blue daylight is even more fascinating. When the winter starts to loosen its grip at the end of April it is light 24 hours a day! By the end of May summer can be in full swing down by the fjord while winter conditions continue to prevail anywhere above 400 metres, where we can go cross-country skiing or dog-sledding under the Midnight Sun. Did you know that the Gulf Stream helps provide such a mild climate here that the harbours are free of ice all winter? - at the top of Europe, on the same latitude as Alaska and Siberia. Why
not try a winter holiday with ANSI Turistservice. An arctic winter at 70oN
with its unique polar nights, northern lights and snow is a fantastic
experience.
It is the perfect place for your winter break, whether you are looking for activities or just searching for peace and quiet. |
